Textual Analysis: Scream

Firstly, we see the camera being tilted to the right; this large space on the left is not dead space, and has in fact has been used intentionally. It demonstrates to us that she is very isolated in a very big house. Instantly we feel scared for her because we sense her vulnerability.

Moreover, the fact that the protagonist is very flirty with the unknown male over the phone represents how much she coincides with traditional gender stereotypes. It also represents her complaisant, non-aggressive ways. Contrasting to her, if we imagine a male being put in her situation, we imagine him to react completely different to the protagonist. Male stereotypes would make a male aggressive and dominant to instantly warn this unknown caller not to mess with him. Further to this, we view her as very talkative; her tactful way with the mysterious caller is her downfall, if she had stopped talking to him straight away, her outcome may have been very different. Her chatty ways made her reveal private information to his unknown character; for instance, that she had a boyfriend and that she was home alone. Moreover, we also receive a sense of how easily influenced she is here; again fitting traditional gender stereotypes. As soon as he mentions horror films she is happy to talk with him. Again, here she is fitting traditional gender stereotypes as she is very desirous of her security, and will reveal personal information about herself even though she has no idea who this caller is.

The protagonist outfit, along with her blonde hair and lipstick reveals a lot about her. Her cream jumper shows her innocence, as the colour represents safety, purity and cleanliness. Contrasting to black, white typically has positive connotations. However, her blonde hair and blue eyes make us stereotype her as a “dumb blonde,” and instantly question her intelligence. Moreover, her minimal make-up further characterises her as innocent and almost childlike. Contrasting to this, it is fairly obvious to us that she is wearing lipstick, which hugely sexualises her.
