Horror Qustionnaire Responses

Here are the results that have been collected from the questionnaire:

From this we can see that most of the people who completed our questionnaire were females, this could alter our results, and make our opening more suited to females, so we will try to receive some feedback from males, to ensure that our results are not biased! The title of this questionnaire received a lot more female attention than male, which contradicts the idea that males enjoy horror films more than females. However, this is good to know for our main brief, as we have targeted our opening at both males and females. .

Luckily, most of the people who took part in our questionnaire were in our target market age group (12-25,) which, (if we incorporate the information they gave us,) should make our opening appeal to this age group.
From this pie chart, we can clearly see that paranormal is the most popular sub-genre of horror film. Therefore, based on this data, we have made the decision to make our main brief a paranormal horror, to suit our target audience.
Horror films are quickly becoming the most popular and successful types of films. From our results, we can see most of the films given are in the genre of paranormal; this demonstrates to us that this is the most popular sub-genre of horror films for our target audience. This is due to the fact that if people see our film being marketed as a paranormal, they are more likely to go and see it as they already enjoy this sub-genre of horror.
From our results, we can come to the conclusion that people watch and enjoy horror films because they like the feeling of being scared, the adrenaline rush and the suspense. This all grabs the audiences attention, and will make the film captivating.
The information in this pie chart is vital in order to find out how to market out film. The majority of people said that they normally watch horror films by streaming them online for free, however it is not possible to make a profit through streaming for free; however, on the other hand, it is a great way to advertise our film and draw the audiences attention in . As most people stream horror films for free, I can put short clips up to watch for free of the film to appeal to the audience. Hopefully, this will intruige the audiene and make them want to watch more. Our second most popular choice was waiting for it to come out on TV and watching it at the cinema. So we will make sure that it will be able to view at the cinema, as well as on the TV; this should hopefully increase the profits of our film. Other responses included; subscribing to a sevice like Netflix and buying the DVD.
For this question, we recieved a huge variety of responses, which represents how peoples view on thier favourite locations for horror films varies hugely. However, the top answer, with the most votes is in the forest/woods, so Chelsea and I have decieded to encoroporate this into our main brief, and are going to be filming outide, in an alleyway, there will be lots of trees and places to hide behind to futher the idea that someone is following her. The next most popular locations are, at home and at an abandoned building. In order for our main brief to appeal to the largest audience possible, we have decided to film at all 3 of these locations; inside my house, outiside and outside an abandoned building. We are going to have 3 locations for our mini brief; a dark cramped room, the protagonist's house and a dark, long, scary alleyway. These all match our responses and will hence hopefully appeal to our audience more and attract more viewers to come and see our film, that will hence hopefully improve profits for the film.
Chelsea and I were quite shocked at the response to this question, as through our research we found out that in most horror films the female is always the protagonist, this is due to gender stereotypes, which portray women to be the weaker, more vulnerable sex. A male would not suit the type of character we have in mind for our main brief, so we have decided to have our protagonist be a female. opefully by doing this it will provoke sympathy from the audience.
There are 3 characters in our opening scene of our horror film; Kirstie, the policewoman and the Masked Man. Most of the people in our questionnaire stated that the age they expect the potagonist to be is from 19-25, which fits with 1 of our characters. However, Kirstie is a school girl, so we expect her to be from the age of 12-18, which was our second most popular choice.

For our main brief, we wanted the narrative structure to be linear, as most films follow a linear structure and most of the people who completed our questionnaire said they prefered a linear narrative structure. In the opening, the equilibrium is established and the opening would finish when the disruption begins.
Again, the responses on this question vary hugely as it is purely down to personal opinion. However, most votes were for the option of, "it does not affect my choice." There were more votes for more likely to watch a film if it was based on a true story, than if it was not. Therefore, in order to draw the audience in, in the opening we would state that the film is based on a true story which would increase enthusiasm for the film.
A ghost is the most popular choice from this questionnaire, however, with a limited budget and equipment, we decided a ghost could be difficult to make it seem realistic. So we have decided to make our antagonist a mixture of the next most popular options; a masked person and and a serial killer. Hopefully by doing this our antagonist should be scary and increase tension in our main brief, and add to the enthusiasm for the film.

To conclude, this questionnaire has helped me understand what people like best about horror films. I am now going to use this information and incorporate it into my main brief as it will make my film appeal to a larger audience.
